Bloodborne pathogens like Hepatitis B (HBV) and HIV can be transmitted through contact with blood or certain other body fluids. OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030, sets requirements for any General Industry employer whose employees have reasonably anticipated occupational exposure, a category that covers far more roles than most people expect, from healthcare and tattoo studios to schools, custodial teams, and shipyards.

This course delivers the knowledge-based training required under the standard: how bloodborne pathogens spread, how to recognize exposure risks, and how to respond if an exposure incident happens. It's the online training component of your Bloodborne Pathogens program. Your employer is still responsible for a few site-specific pieces the course can't provide, covered below.

Recognizing Bloodborne Hazards

This course is built on OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030, which applies to General Industry employers nationwide and, through 29 CFR 1915.1030, to shipyard employment (ship repair, building, and breaking) under identical requirements. It does not apply to general construction work. The standard requires retraining at least annually, and this course is built to satisfy that requirement year after year.

This course is based on the federal standard. If you work under an OSHA-approved State Plan, check with your employer or state program for any additional requirements.

What this course provides

  • Knowledge-based training on transmission, precautions, PPE, and exposure response required under §1910.1030(g)(2)
  • A Certificate of Completion you can provide to your employer as documentation

What your employer must still provide

  • A written, site-specific Exposure Control Plan, and an explanation of that plan to you
  • The Hepatitis B vaccine, offered at no cost within 10 working days of your start in an exposed role (or a signed declination)
  • Post-exposure medical evaluation and follow-up through a licensed healthcare professional
  • The actual PPE, engineering controls, and work-practice controls used at your worksite
  • Required recordkeeping, including a sharps injury log where applicable
