What OSHA Requires and What Employers Must Do
Federal OSHA regulations at 29 CFR 1910.178(l) and 29 CFR 1926.602(d) require that only trained and competent operators be permitted to operate powered industrial trucks, including rough terrain forklifts and telehandlers. The training must include formal instruction, practical training, and workplace evaluation.
This online course provides the formal instruction component. However, OSHA requires employers to complete two additional steps before permitting an operator to work independently: hands-on practical training with the actual equipment and a workplace evaluation demonstrating that the operator can safely perform the job under the conditions present at that specific worksite.
