Course Overview

The training every powered industrial truck operator has to have.

OSHA requires employers to train and certify every worker who operates a forklift or other powered industrial truck. This course delivers the formal instruction portion of that requirement, covering how these machines behave under load and what it takes to move product without putting people at risk.

You will work through truck classifications, stability and load capacity, pre-shift inspections, refueling and battery charging, pedestrian and dock hazards, and safe operating procedures on ramps, in aisles, and around blind corners. Finish the course and you can immediately download your certificate, a printable wallet card, and the operator evaluation form your employer needs for the hands-on portion.

Stability & Load Handling
The stability triangle, center of gravity, capacity plates, and how loads change what the truck can safely do.
Inspections & Maintenance
Pre-operation and daily inspection requirements, removing a truck from service, and refueling and battery charging safety.
Safe Operating Procedures
Traveling, turning, ramps, dock plates, visibility, speed, and working safely around pedestrians and other equipment.
Certification & Recordkeeping
What OSHA expects from employers, the evaluation form, refresher triggers, and the three-year recertification cycle.
How Certification Works

Three steps to a certified operator.

OSHA splits operator certification into classroom instruction, hands-on training, and a practical evaluation. This course handles the first step and gives you the paperwork for the rest.

Step 1
Formal Instruction

Complete this online course at your own pace. You can instantly download a certificate of completion for your employer and print a wallet-sized operator card.

Step 2
Hands-On Training

Your employer provides equipment demonstrations and practical exercises so you become familiar with the specific trucks and hazards at your jobsite.

Step 3
Operator Evaluation

Download the Powered Industrial Truck Operator Evaluation Form at the end of the course. Once you pass the behind-the-wheel evaluation and both signatures are on the form, you are a certified operator.

Who It's For

If you operate a truck or supervise someone who does, start here.

Operators must be at least 18 years old. Supervisors, safety coordinators, and anyone who shares a floor with lift trucks benefit from the same hazard awareness the operators get.

Forklift & Lift Truck Operators
Warehouse & Distribution Staff
Manufacturing & Plant Workers
Construction & Yard Crews
Shipping & Receiving Teams
Supervisors & Safety Coordinators
Stay Compliant

One training program. Nationwide compliance.

Certification is valid for three years, and OSHA requires refresher training sooner if an operator is involved in an accident or near miss, receives an unfavorable evaluation, or is assigned a different type of truck. Our course is maintained against the current powered industrial truck standard so your records hold up.

Certification has three parts: formal instruction, which this online course satisfies; hands-on training provided by your employer on the equipment you will operate; and an employer-led operator evaluation. Once you pass the evaluation and both you and your employer sign the form, you are certified.
